Everyone dreams of having clear spotless skin that will make them look youthful and also boost self-confidence. Dark spots or hyperpigmentation occur on the skin when some areas of the skin produce more melanin than usual. Melanin is the pigment that gives the eyes, skin, and hair their color. It is also responsible for the tanning of skin exposed to sunlight.

The color of dark spots may depend on the tone of a person’s skin, ranging from light brown to dark brown. These spots have the same texture as the skin and aren’t painful. These spots generally appear on the face, back, forearms, shoulders, and back of the hands.

Causes of dark spots

Exposure to sunlight is the prime factor for increased Melanin production. It may lead to dark pigmentation or age spots on the skin.

Melasma or dark spots are usually caused by hormonal imbalance. They usually occur on the cheeks, forehead, nose, or above the lips and are generally light brown and patchy. They are common in women who are pregnant or taking oral contraceptives.

When skin is subjected to harsh treatments such as over-exfoliation or waxing, it results in irritation and the formation of dark spots.

They can also be caused due to certain skin inflammation or injuries.

Medicines like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), psychotropic medications, or tetracyclines can lead to heightened melanin production and results in dark spot formation.

With simple home remedies and treatments, one can diminish the appearance of these dark spots.
